The activity in the relocation market does seem to be picking up. We are experiencing an unprecedented number of enquiries at the moment – let’s hope they convert to real projects (early signs are that they all will).
I am keen to see how the workplace of the future will be affected by the recession and also, more importantly, by the younger generation. The familiar desk is a potential casualty during this change as the desk top is now on the computer not where papers used to collect. Providing the technology to support the alternative ways of working will be fundamental in allowing this happen.
We should also respect that one solution does not fit all. Different people work in different ways and some departments need to function with traditional practices. Therefore, variety is the key to developing new ways of working by not forcing people to follow a path but allow them to see benefits for both their own wellbeing and the company’s. The leaders are already seeing benefits by attracting better employees and retaining them. We do not all have to be wild and wacky for alternative ways of working like Google. And again the message is one solution does not fit all.
